For those who don't know it, the power supply in an amp or preamp has a significant effect on the sound quality. Most audio equipment is engineered by bean counters, who usually gravitate towards the lowest-cost power supply components. Many power supplies in tube equipment use conventional P-N type silicon diodes (1N4007, etc.), that are cheap and compact, but typically sound awful due to their slow rise time and resultant tendency to generate noisy current spikes.
Silicon diodes sound bad because they generate switching noise from their slow forward rise-time in comparison to tube rectifiers. This slow recovery time has always been an issue with regular silicon (or germanium, for that matter) rectifiers. Now there is an inexpensive product that reduces this switching noise, Fast Recovery Expitaxial Diodes.
Fast Recovery Epitaxial Diodes (FREDs) were developed initially by International Rectifier, in the early 1970s. Tube electronics were not the intended application, as high-frequency switching power supplies were just starting to become popular, forcing component manufacturers to develop faster and more efficient devices. IR's trade name was HEXFRED. Now, several manufacturers make FREDs, including IR, Harris, IXYS, General Semiconductor, etc.
How do they sound?
Compared to silicon diodes, FREDs have a full and airy sound. The bass is tightened up, and the harsh edge in the mids and highs almost disappears. Details in the music start to come out with greater clarity than ever before. FREDs sound as close to a tube rectifier as one can get, while not requiring additional power to run a filament or heater.
Most modern audio equipment including amps, preamps, CD players, etc will be improved significantly by installing FREDs. Good vintage hi-fi candidates for upgrading to FREDs include: Fisher 400, 500, 800 receivers, Fisher tube integrated amps with silicon rectifiers, EICO HF-87 and HF-89, Harman-Kardon Citation II and V, H. H. Scott 340B receivers, Sherwood integrated amps and receivers, McIntosh amplifiers, preamps and tuners, Marantz amplifiers and preamps, etc. Heck, they will even make most of your solid-state gear sound much better.
Note: FREDS also sound great in all guitar amps, tube or solid state!!!
VTV Pro-Shop carries the high quality German manufactured IXYS FREDs that come in 600 @ 8 amps and 1200 @ 11 amp ratings. Typically, diode peak-inverse-voltage ratings should be at least twice the DC supply voltage, because the rectifiers have to handle both positive and negative AC voltage peaks. Example: if the circuit will produce an operating voltage of 250 volts DC, it would require a FRED with a minimum of 500 volts rating. Be conservative, as there is the added possibility of occasional line-voltage spikes.
You can use IXYS FREDs in Bias, B+ and Filament supplies. Even though they are more expensive than ten-cent 1N4007 diodes, installing FREDs in your power supply can improve the sound of your system to a greater degree than exotic cables or most other tweaks. You will hear detail and depth in your music that will astound you!
Installation Instructions: IMPORTANT READ THIS!
Polarity of the FREDs is as follows: the Cathode (negative side) is the lead at the left side of the device when viewing the front of the device (printed side up). When installing FREDs, be sure to use a hemostat or heat sink on the lead being soldered to divert the heat of soldering from the diode. In some cases, attaching additional lead length to the FRED may be necessary to install in your circuit.

Schottky and Bridge Diodes
For filament and bias applications, the Schottky diodes are an excellent alternative to standard silicon diodes. Tests have shown the Schottky diodes generate cleaner DC with less ripple and noise artifacts than silicon types. They are competitively priced and will really clean up your filament or bias supplies while improving your sound.
We also have great non-Schottky silicon diode bridges to replace that old selenium bridge in Fisher, Scott, HK and other vintage tube amps. The bridge has a hole in the middle so it can be mounted using a machine screw. Also has sturdy leads. Perfect for Fisher 500c, 800c, Scott 222, 299, etc.
